Tim Burton
For this theme, we where to pick someone we admired (and that had a biography on them) and complete This or Thats about them.
I choose Tim Burton because his movies are so different than typical animations, and also because I love how strange and unique he is. I think something that makes him interesting is that a lot of his films are based on drawings he made as a kid.
Part of the assignment was to read a biography about the person. The one that I chose to read was named Burton on Burton and had a forword by Johnny Depp. Overall, the book was intriguing. Each chapter he reflected on a different film he had done. This included the people, characters, and storyline. I felt like the book was very in depth and I learned a lot about Burton through it. At some parts, there was some added information by an editor to clarify things, which I felt Burton could have done himself. Aside from that, the book was very informational and interesting.
Here are my This or Thats that I completed.
Week 1:
I chose "this", which was a portrait poem in the perspective of Tim Burton. This is my first draft.
What I wanted to change about this was adding in a picture of Tim Burton so it was obvious who I was talking about. The first product that I came up with was this:

I realized that the final word was cut off, so I had to fix that. To do so, all I had to do was make the text a size smaller. Also, I wanted the whole picture to be bigger so it was eaiser to read. This was the final product that I came up with.
Week 2:
I chose "this", a photo slideshow story!
The assignment was to pick one event in Tim Burton's life and explain it in only pictures. The event I chose was when Burton went to work for Disney back in 1990.

This was my first draft:
After getting evaluation from peers, what I wanted to change with this was add more slides to make it more clear, add in more details to the slides to create a little bit more information, and make sure every slide was clear and easy to understand. However, somethings I didn't want to change were having no words and using hand-drawn pictures.
This was my second draft:
This was my second draft:
After this draft, I had realized some of my information had been wrong. So, I decided to make one more draft and polish up my mistake along with some part of the drawings. Along with that, I wanted the theme to scream Tim Burton, so I had to create all of the drawings in that style.
Week 3:
I chose "this", I had to create a "six word memoir" with a full sentence.
While brainstorming, I chose to stick to a theme and make it clear that he created the stories that all have the same style of animation. This is because that's how people would know who he is. My first idea was "He makes creepy look fun", but I realized that it needed more details, and it was too short. I spent a lot of time trying to decide what sounded the best. One example is: You know those animations that always look the same creepy way, he’s the man that put that together. However all the ones I came up with just weren't "the one". After a couple of days, I finally figured out one that sounded so Tim Burton, I had to choose it! The sentence was...

After some feedback, I decided there were several things I needed to change about it. These include: a background that is easy put text on, use a darker shade of red, and take out Tim Burton's name. So, I created a second draft.
Week 4:
I chose the "this", which was a dialogue scene between Tim Burton and another person.
I really struggled with this one. I had to create a scene of dialogue between Tim and another person. I think the main reason I struggled was because I am not Tim Burton. I couldn't just think up exactly what he would say in any situation, along with another person as well. I watched several interviews of him, and the person I was going to choose was Johnny Depp. Mainly because they are such good friends and Depp has been in a lot of his movies. I watched several more interviews, this time with both Burton and Depp. I had several drafts that I just ended up trashing completely because I was not satisfied with them at all.
After a couple of weeks I still had nothing.

Week 5:
I chose "that", which was a magazine cover.
I researched magazines online to find out what people see in them. I created a small sketch-like creation, just to see what it was like to create something of this medium.

I named it Behind The Scenes because this made up magazine would take actors, directors, celebrities of any kind and go "behind the scenes" on their lives.
The next portion of the assignment was to tell a story, so I decided to make a "Christmas Edition" and make it about The Nightmare Before Christmas. I had several ideas and used the layout of my trial cover. This is what I came up with.

The strange thing about the magazine cover was that the photo itself was darker, which was very odd. However, it didn't really affect anything drastically so I kept it.
